Why Are Car Insurance Rates Going Up?

Why Are Car Insurance Rates Going Up? There are many reasons for the current auto insurance rate increases across the market. Here are some of the notable ones.  Severe Accidents There was a rise in the severity of automobile accidents between 2020-2022. In fact, fatal car crashes were up 15% in 2022 as compared to 2020.1 Increased Vehicle Value Another contributor affecting the auto insurance market: the value of most vehicles — both new and used — increased while supply decreased. As of September 2022, used car and truck prices went up 7.2% and new vehicle prices were 9.4% higher when compared to September 2021.2 More expensive cars (and parts) also make repairs and replacements costlier. When comparing November 2022 to November 2021, bodywork costs rose 12% and repair costs grew by 15%.3 Vehicle supply dropped in large part because key materials like semiconductors, which are needed f ...

How to Help Prepare for a Hurricane

Your level of preparation before a hurricane can have a significant impact on how well you weather the storm and how quickly you recover from it. Consider preparing your home, inside and out, long before a storm is in the forecast. In the end, you can never be too prepared when it comes to protecting your loved ones and your property from hurricanes and other extreme weather events. Know the Forecast You may hear the terms "Hurricane Watch" and "Hurricane Warning" in your local forecast. 5 Tips to Protect Your Possessions with Valuable Items Insurance Coverage

You may think that a homeowners insurance policy provides adequate coverage for all your valuables, but policies may provide limited or no coverage for certain items — including generally expensive items — that are damaged or stolen. For example, many homeowners policies generally have a $1,000 or $1,500 coverage amount for jewelry if the loss is due to theft. Such limits are in place to help keep homeowners policies affordable. However, if jewelry valued at $2,000 is stolen from your home and you have a $1,000 policy limit, you can only receive $1,000 from your insurer to replace the missing items. That is when an insurance endorsement (sometimes called a rider) can provide increased coverage for your possessions. For an additional premium, this coverage can help protect you from the loss of high-end valuables such as jewelry, furs, antiques, artwork and collectibles. Here are five tip ...

Umbrella Insurance

If you own a home, car, or boat, you’re likely to have primary insurance policies that provide liability coverage for each of these assets. However, your primary policy limits may not be enough to cover all claimed damages, which can cause unexpected financial hardship. That’s where umbrella insurance comes in. Umbrella liability insurance is designed to further protect against the costs of: Claims made against you for bodily injury to others due to a car accident, boat incident, fall or other covered accidents. Claims made against you for covered damage to others’ property. Personal liability for claims like libel, slander, defamation of character and invasion of privacy. Potential out-of-pocket expenses related to each of these (or other) covered incidents.  Additionally, with increasing dollar amounts awarded by juries in personal auto liability cases—driven partially by social infla ...

Slowly turn water back on and inspect for leaks. If there are leaks, be prepa ...

Severe weather demands your undivided attention, so be sure to reduce driving distractions by turning the radio down and turning off and stowing your phone to help you keep your attention fully on the road. Keep in mind that sometimes the best decision you can make is to avoid driving altogether and to stay off the road completely until the weather clears. What Is a Smart Alarm System and Why Should I Consider One?

In 2014, criminals committed more than 8.2 million property crimes in the United States, of which nearly 21% were burglaries, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  With those types of statistics, it is no wonder home security systems are on people's minds. But in a world where technology seems to evolve every month, home security systems have ventured into new territory: smart alarms. What Is a Smart Alarm System? As recently as 10 years ago, consumers did not have access to technology that let them manage their own home security systems. Smart alarm systems changed that. Originally, traditional security systems were hardwired into the home and monitored by a central station, usually a home alarm company. The customer paid monthly fees. Fast forward and today, consumers have smartphones, home networks and wireless technology—all of which the smart alarm system can util ...

Hail Protection for Your Home

Hail storms can strike without much warning, leaving you with little time to react. Being prepared in advance — and knowing what to do — can help you stay safe and keep damage to a minimum. Consider signing up for local weather alerts, which deliver warnings when hail storms are approaching your area. What Is Hail? Hail is a type of solid precipitation, distinct from, but often confused with sleet. Sleet generally falls in colder temperatures while hail growth is inhibited at very cold temperatures. Hail creation is possible within thunderstorms and is formed when water vapor in updrafts reaches a freezing point. Ice then forms and is suspended in the air by updrafts and falls down to be coated by water again. This process can occur over and over adding many layers to the hailstone. Hailstones can be as small as peas or as large as softballs, and the larger ones can cause injury and seri ...

Winter Driving Safety Tips

When winter weather strikes, drivers face out-of-the-ordinary challenges when they get behind the wheel. Snow, slush or icy roads are involved in nearly one in four weather-related vehicle crashes.1 These conditions can make it harder for drivers to see, slow down and stop – all factors that can increase the chances of an accident. If you must travel during winter weather, preparing your car in advance, knowing the forecast and driving based on road conditions are three key ways to help you drive more safely. Following are some winter driving safety tips to help you prepare for the elements – before you face them – on the road. The Science Behind Christmas Tree Fires

From the moment a spark ignites a Christmas tree, it can take only a matter of minutes before noxious smoke and scorching heat fill the entire room, igniting everything within it. Seconds later, the fire can travel up a staircase and perhaps make escape virtually impossible for anyone on the second floor of your home. There’s a scientific explanation for why these types of fires can be so dangerous, explains John Machnicki, a Travelers Risk Control fire safety professional. It has to do with how much heat energy a tree can emit and the conditions that allow the temperature within the room to rise so quickly. “Christmas trees are powerful fuel sources, especially when dry,” Machnicki said. “The tree becomes a fuel that burns very rapidly and gives off a lot of heat energy.” A blazing tree can give off as much heat as forty thousand 100-watt light bulbs, enough to create flashover within a ...

New, old, owned or leased — a regular maintenance routine can help protect the value, enjoyment and safety of your car. It can also save you hassles and money in repairs down the road. How often and what care your car needs depends on the make, model and mileage of your vehicle, as well as your individual driving habits. For instance, caring for an older car will require more frequent and different types of maintenance. It is also important to recognize what checks and repairs you can do yourself, and what is best left to the professionals. These general guidelines and links can help you establish a basic car maintenance routine. Specific recommendations and instructions for your car can be found in your vehicle owner’s manual. Remember to follow your dealer’s recommended service schedule, too.

Severe weather demands your undivided attention, so be sure to reduce any possible distractions by turning the radio down or turning off that phone to keep your attention fully on the road. Keep in mind that sometimes the best driving decision you can make is to stay off the road completely until the weather clears. 3 Tips for Driving in Fog 1. Slow down. Driving at normal speeds in fog can be very dangerous. Be sure to slow down so you have more time to react if traffic stops or other hazards appear. When visibility is severely limited, find a safe place to park, away from travel lanes, and wait for conditions to improve. 2. Always headlights, never brights. A ...

As many golfers and other outdoors enthusiasts can attest, thunderstorms can often strike with little to no warning, especially during the warmer months of the year. The lightning strikes that accompany these thunderstorms pose a serious threat to people and safety. Knowing how to react to a sudden storm is critical to ensuring your safety in any situation when you may be caught unexpectedly. The following tips can help you stay safe when a storm does happen. Find indoor shelter. Get inside the nearest available hard-topped vehicle or building, keeping all windows shut, and stay there for at least 30 minutes after the storm passes before returning outside. Avoid picnic tents, pavilions or other open, outdoor structures. Get to low ground. Avoid hilltops and open areas. Lightning seeks the highest ground, so if indoor shelter is not available, crouching down in the nearest, lowest, unexpo ...

Cigna wins approval to acquire Express Scripts Pharma deals to reshape the industry   The Department of Justice has granted antitrust approval of Cigna’s acquisition of pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts, the next move in a years-long trend of healthcare company consolidation. Many see the prescription drug industry — often characterized by high prices and an opaque supply chain — as ripe for disruption, which may be driving deals like the Cigna/Express merger. Cigna and Express Scripts said in a statement that merging the insurer and pharmacy benefit manager will reduce healthcare costs, expand choice and improve patient outcomes. However, some in the industry question what impact the deal will have on consumers, particularly as healthcare consolidation has often led to higher prices and fewer options. The deal is also considered to be a positive sign for CVS Health’s ...

Keep the following in mind next time your fire up the grill to enjoy a delicious meal with friends and family.   First and foremost, think about the location of your outdoor grill. Make sure that your grill is not too close to your home, especially if your house has combustible siding. Business Cyber Security

Small businesses are a vital part of America’s thriving economy. Unfortunately, small businesses often fall prey to breaches in cybersecurity. In fact, 44 percent of small businesses are victims of cyber attacks. These cyber attacks cost, on average, $9,000. There are easy, simple steps that you can take to ensure that your business’ cybersecurity is locked tight, and your business does not become a casualty of a cyber attack. The best place to start securing your network from outside threats is with antivirus software and antispyware. It is important to remember to update this software regularly. Typically, there is an automatic software update that you can configure for your network. Using a firewall and encrypting information will safeguard your Internet connection. In Memoriam of Larry Locke

My dad Larry Locke took his final breath this afternoon. He was in the comfort of his own home in Lebanon, Tennessee. It was as beautiful a spring day as Middle Tennessee can provide. Lovely breeze. Chirping birds. Blooming flowers. But Dad had been unable for weeks to notice the glory of God's created world. He was ready to go and be with the Lord forever. Over the last 2+ years, Larry had struggled with dementia and previously undiagnosed depression. A lifelong runner, he had never spent a night in the hospital prior to this sickness. The loss of his vitality was a blow to all who knew and loved him. While his first hospitalization returned him to a level close to his old self, subsequent declines and hospital stays left him a shadow of the man we knew. His time for this life would number 76 years. Larry Locke was born in 1942 in Shelbyville, Tennessee. His father, W. H. Locke, owned a ...

Network dispute leads to $14 million in balance bills

This article originally appeared in the Tennessean. Are you covered under BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Network S? You may not have known that prior to this year, BlueCross had an agreement with HCA TriStar hospitals to provide emergency care at in-network rates, even though HCA TriStar hospitals are not a part of Network S.  That agreement ended as of January, and the result is a $14 million headache that may soon affect patients’ pocketbooks. HCA has announced it will soon begin balance billing BlueCross members for out-of-network care received at TriStar facilities.  What does all this mean? In-network versus out-of-network Let’s take a step back and understand the difference between in-network and out-of-network, and how this distinction can cost consumers.  Insurance companies negotiate with hospitals to discount bills for health care services. For example, Acme Hospital agrees ...

Workers' Compensation

Workers’ compensation is a type of insurance that all new employers need to provide for their employees. Therefore, it is important to understand what it is, and how it covers you and your employees from costly misfortunes. If an employee is injured while at the workplace, he or she will need to be insured to cover all medical and rehabilitation expenses. Workers’ compensation is a form of insurance that will cover all these expenses, and it will in some cases cover lost wages. As an employer, it is important to provide this type of insurance to your employees because it will give you, and them, peace of mind. Since this insurance will be covering all costs due to an injury on site, your employee gives up his or her right to sue your business for negligence. This is a win-win for all parties involved because of the time and expense that comes along with a lawsuit. The cost of workers’ co ...

Safe Driving on Winter Roads

During the winter months, we are sometimes granted the beauty of snow, but with beautiful snow come dangerous road conditions. We all can not always stay indoors or play outside during these “snow days,” so if you have to get out on the road, it is crucial to be prepared and to drive cautiously on the road during severe winter weather conditions. Before any precipitation hits the ground, you should prepare your automobile in case you have to drive during severe winter weather. When you see snow in the forecast, make sure you have at least a half full tank of gas, and that your tires are properly inflated. If you are planning on a long-distance trip and winter weather is in the forecast, be sure to let others know of the route that you plan to take, where you are traveling, and your estimated time of arrival. Keep an extra set of warm clothes, a charged cell phone, a blanket, and drinkabl ...
