Home Solar Panel Installation Tips

The demand for clean and renewable energy is growing significantly. With more installation and financing options available than ever before, utilizing solar energy has become increasingly attractive to homeowners seeking environmentally and economically sustainable ways to power their homes. Even with such potential benefits, the decision to install solar panels for your home is not one to be made lightly. Here are a few things to consider before you invest in solar power. Should I Go Solar? In order to determine if your home is a good fit for a solar panel installation, some key issues should be considered. First, it is important your home has a southern exposure that is not shaded by trees or other structures. You may need to remove tree limbs to provide adequate sun exposure to your solar panels. How Do I Pay for Solar? The switch to solar energy is a long-term investment. The upfront ...

Grilling Safety Tips

You may be the kind of person who fires up the grill all year long at tailgating parties, or maybe you wait for a warm summer day and a backyard full of friends before you put on your apron. Either way, grilling can be one of life’s simple pleasures. Unfortunately, where there is fun there is also the potential for safety issues. For example, did you know that leaving the grill unattended, not cleaning grease or fat build up properly, or placing the grill too close to combustible siding can cause injuries, fires and property damage? Charcoal or Gas? Nearly 9,000 home fires a year involve grills, according to a National Fire Protection Association report. Of all the home fires involving grills, gas-fueled grills accounted for four out of five fires, while 16% involved charcoal or other solid-fueled grills.¹ Gas and charcoal grills each have ardent advocates, who praise the convenience of ...

10 Tips to Reduce Distracted Driving

More than 40,000 Americans died on the roads in 2016, the most significant increase in deaths over a two-year period in more than 50 years.1 Whether someone you love has been known to text and drive, or you have found yourself distracted behind the wheel, these tips can help avoid dangerous activity on the road. Stow your phone. Turning off the phone and putting it in “do not disturb” mode can help remove the temptation to browse online at a red light or respond right away to a text message. Vow not to multi-task. Anything that occupies your mind or vision can be a distraction behind the wheel. Make time at home to eat meals or put on makeup, so you can focus on the road. Don’t be a distraction. Avoid calling or texting family members and friends when you know they are driving to avoid distracting them. Talk to your employer. Responding to texts or taking calls for work while driving can ...

What Is a Smart Alarm System and Why Should I Consider One?

In 2014, criminals committed more than 8.2 million property crimes in the United States, of which nearly 21% were burglaries, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  With those types of statistics, it is no wonder home security systems are on people's minds. But in a world where technology seems to evolve every month, home security systems have ventured into new territory: smart alarms. What Is a Smart Alarm System? As recently as 10 years ago, consumers did not have access to technology that let them manage their own home security systems. Smart alarm systems changed that. Originally, traditional security systems were hardwired into the home and monitored by a central station, usually a home alarm company. The customer paid monthly fees. Fast forward and today, consumers have smartphones, home networks and wireless technology—all of which the smart alarm system can util ...

6 Tips on Selling your car

Do you need to sell your car so you can upgrade to a vehicle that better fits your lifestyle? Maybe you landed your first job and want to reward yourself with a nicer car, or you're starting a family and need to swap your convertible for a minivan. A vehicle change is going to prompt some insurance-related questions in the process, so you’ll want to do your homework before you get too far down the path of a new, or “new-to-you” vehicle. And while selling your used car can help to fund the purchase of a new vehicle, the process can take some time and effort. Follow these tips that may provide a “smoother ride” to selling your car. 1. Decide where to sell your car. The first question to ask: Where should you sell your used car? Options include: Selling on your own locally; Selling through an online car marketplace; or Selling your car to a dealer. Each option has pros and cons, so choose ...

How to Help Prevent Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes can present an invisible threat – one that you might not recognize until the weather starts to warm. By then, the water damage can be significant and costly. Fortunately, keeping your home warmer, at a consistent temperature, and better insulated can help protect your pipes from freezing this winter. Which Pipes Are Most at Risk? Pipes that are most exposed to the elements, including those outdoors and along the exterior walls of your home, may need extra protection during winter months. These include the following: Outdoor hose hookups and faucets. Swimming pool supply lines. Lawn sprinkler lines. Water pipes in unheated, interior locations such as basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages and kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Pipes running against exterior walls with little or no insulation. How to Help Prevent Frozen Pipes Before winter: Check your home for areas where wate ...

2018 Cigna wins approval to acquire Express Scripts

Cigna wins approval to acquire Express Scripts Pharma deals to reshape the industry   The Department of Justice has granted antitrust approval of Cigna’s acquisition of pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts, the next move in a years-long trend of healthcare company consolidation. Many see the prescription drug industry — often characterized by high prices and an opaque supply chain — as ripe for disruption, which may be driving deals like the Cigna/Express merger. Cigna and Express Scripts said in a statement that merging the insurer and pharmacy benefit manager will reduce healthcare costs, expand choice and improve patient outcomes. However, some in the industry question what impact the deal will have on consumers, particularly as healthcare consolidation has often led to higher prices and fewer options. The deal is also considered to be a positive sign for CVS Health’s ...

Grilling Safety Tips

The warm weather is a great time to take your cooking outdoors and fire up the grill! One of Summer’s simple pleasures is inviting friends and family over for a cookout in your backyard during a warm summer evening. Unfortunately, nearly 9,000 home fires that occur in a year are due to outdoor grills according to the National Fire Protection Association. Gas-fueled grills were the cause of four out of five home fires involving outdoor grills as opposed to charcoal grills. Keep the following in mind next time your fire up the grill to enjoy a delicious meal with friends and family.   First and foremost, think about the location of your outdoor grill. Make sure that your grill is not too close to your home, especially if your house has combustible siding. The grill needs to be on a level surface and at least ten feet away from your house, your garage, or other outdoor structures. Also, do ...

Business Cyber Security

Small businesses are a vital part of America’s thriving economy. Unfortunately, small businesses often fall prey to breaches in cybersecurity. In fact, 44 percent of small businesses are victims of cyber attacks. These cyber attacks cost, on average, $9,000. There are easy, simple steps that you can take to ensure that your business’ cybersecurity is locked tight, and your business does not become a casualty of a cyber attack. The best place to start securing your network from outside threats is with antivirus software and antispyware. It is important to remember to update this software regularly. Typically, there is an automatic software update that you can configure for your network. Using a firewall and encrypting information will safeguard your Internet connection. Make sure that you have a password protection with your Wi-Fi network and do not broadcast your network name (SSID). An ...

In Memoriam of Larry Locke

My dad Larry Locke took his final breath this afternoon. He was in the comfort of his own home in Lebanon, Tennessee. It was as beautiful a spring day as Middle Tennessee can provide. Lovely breeze. Chirping birds. Blooming flowers. But Dad had been unable for weeks to notice the glory of God's created world. He was ready to go and be with the Lord forever. Over the last 2+ years, Larry had struggled with dementia and previously undiagnosed depression. A lifelong runner, he had never spent a night in the hospital prior to this sickness. The loss of his vitality was a blow to all who knew and loved him. While his first hospitalization returned him to a level close to his old self, subsequent declines and hospital stays left him a shadow of the man we knew. His time for this life would number 76 years. Larry Locke was born in 1942 in Shelbyville, Tennessee. His father, W. H. Locke, owned a ...

Network dispute leads to $14 million in balance bills

This article originally appeared in the Tennessean. Are you covered under BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Network S? You may not have known that prior to this year, BlueCross had an agreement with HCA TriStar hospitals to provide emergency care at in-network rates, even though HCA TriStar hospitals are not a part of Network S.  That agreement ended as of January, and the result is a $14 million headache that may soon affect patients’ pocketbooks. HCA has announced it will soon begin balance billing BlueCross members for out-of-network care received at TriStar facilities.  What does all this mean? In-network versus out-of-network Let’s take a step back and understand the difference between in-network and out-of-network, and how this distinction can cost consumers.  Insurance companies negotiate with hospitals to discount bills for health care services. For example, Acme Hospital agrees ...

Workers' Compensation

Workers’ compensation is a type of insurance that all new employers need to provide for their employees. Therefore, it is important to understand what it is, and how it covers you and your employees from costly misfortunes. If an employee is injured while at the workplace, he or she will need to be insured to cover all medical and rehabilitation expenses. Workers’ compensation is a form of insurance that will cover all these expenses, and it will in some cases cover lost wages. As an employer, it is important to provide this type of insurance to your employees because it will give you, and them, peace of mind. Since this insurance will be covering all costs due to an injury on site, your employee gives up his or her right to sue your business for negligence. This is a win-win for all parties involved because of the time and expense that comes along with a lawsuit. The cost of workers’ co ...

Safe Driving on Winter Roads

During the winter months, we are sometimes granted the beauty of snow, but with beautiful snow come dangerous road conditions. We all can not always stay indoors or play outside during these “snow days,” so if you have to get out on the road, it is crucial to be prepared and to drive cautiously on the road during severe winter weather conditions. Before any precipitation hits the ground, you should prepare your automobile in case you have to drive during severe winter weather. When you see snow in the forecast, make sure you have at least a half full tank of gas, and that your tires are properly inflated. If you are planning on a long-distance trip and winter weather is in the forecast, be sure to let others know of the route that you plan to take, where you are traveling, and your estimated time of arrival. Keep an extra set of warm clothes, a charged cell phone, a blanket, and drinkabl ...

High Deductible Health Plans and HSA Accounts

If you are young, healthy, and have not visited the doctor more than twice a year, you may be interested in changing your old health insurance plan to a high deductible health plan (HDHP). An HDHP is a better choice for you because it offers lower monthly premiums in exchange for a higher deductible. A HDHP is often paired with a health savings account (HSA) that allows you and/or your employer to contribute tax deductibles, which you can later use to pay for your medical expenses, tax free! Before you consider switching plans, it is important to remember the purpose of  health insurance. Health insurance is a way to cover you financially in the event of something that would require a high cost, not a way to cut costs that might occasionally come up within a given year. So, is an HDHP the best insurance plan for you? Yes, if you are under 50 years old, in good health, and have no serious ...

Driver Safety For Young Drivers

Automobile safety is always an important topic. Whether it’s being intentional about driving according to the speed limit or being extra alert when changing lanes, there are obvious ways to adhere to a safe driving experience. However, young drivers often find themselves in dangerous driving situations due to either a lack of experience and knowledge or from peer pressure and the temptation to go beyond regular driving practices. With the help of technology, though, parents can monitor their teen’s habits and possibly prevent accident, injury, and even death. Here are some of the ways that parents can be more involved in their teenager’s driving habits. Speed: Many automobile companies offer ways for parents of teen drivers to check in on how fast their teens are actually driving. Distracted Driving and Automobile Safety

Something that our team here at THW takes very seriously is automobile safety. As automobile deaths are proven to be occurring more and more frequently, it is the perfect time to really stop and take time to consider how to achieve the safest driving conditions as possible. Something that may be contributing to the steady incline in automobile related accidents, and even fatal crashes, could potentially be the rise in the use of technology in vehicles. Think about it—the more there is to do in your car besides entirely focusing on driving, the more likely you are to become a distracted driver. From the use of GPS apps on mobile phones to adjusting music on a handheld device, there are so many ways to utilize technology while driving. Although the use of smart interfaces in dashboards can be a sure way to limit the number of times drivers turn to their phones, it can still pose a huge ris ...

Spring is HERE, Home maintenance tips just for you

Although it certainly doesn't look like it right now in certain portions of the country, the spring season is upon us. With the snow and ice this winter brought, the harsh weather likely took its toll on the exterior of your home. To best refresh your home’s exterior, and interior, after the winter weather, here are a few typical problem areas to look at:Looking for water damageThe accumulated snow and slush of the winter does a number on the gutters of most homes. Left uncleaned, the melting precipitation can overflow gutters and damage eaves. According to Houzz, an online homeowner's resource and marketplace, this might provide a point of entry for rodents and other pests to crawl through your attic or top floor. If you didn't get a lot of snow, you can probably take care of ice and snow removal yourself with a ladder and scraper, but if winter was rough or damage to your roof line h ...

Avoiding Frozen Pipes

Avoiding Frozen Pipes

One of the best ways to avoid catastrophe is to focus on prevention measures. Did you know that water expands in volume by nine percent when it freezes? This means that when water freezes inside of your pipes, it can easily cause the pipes to rupture. Once pipes rupture, it can cause leaks that can then lead to water damage, mold, and other hazardous situations. Specialists are usually needed to mediate the situations when pipes burst, so it is best to avoid the rupture altogether. Freezing pipes eventually thaw out and the water then leaks into other areas. The areas that aren’t typically used to frozen temperatures pose the most risks and should be approached with the most caution. In order to have the best chances of avoiding freezing pipes, try using CPVC & PVC pipes because they are more flexible than copper. CPVC and PVC pipes can handle more pressure and frozen water than other ma ...

Repeal and Replace ACA

NEWS ON THE HILL SHARE 09 March 2017 House Introduces Legislation to Repeal and Replace ACA BY WYATT STEWART Earlier this week, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives introduced two pieces of legislation that would begin the process of repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The Committee on Ways and Means reported one of the pieces of legislation last night. The other is pending in the Energy and Commerce Committee. Both are expected to be combined into the “American Health Care Act” before they make their way to the House floor. The legislation is expected to move through Congress using the budget reconciliation process, which only requires 51 votes in the U.S. Senate to pass legislation instead of the 60 votes it takes to end debate. Note that Congress is unable to repeal and replace the entire ACA using the reconciliation process. The Trump Administra ...

Winter Dangers And How We Can Help

Winter is a beautiful time of year but it can also be a dangerous season since winter weather can cause devastating damage. As a business, it is smart for you to know the risks that these winter months bring so that you can know how to prepare. Although there are tons of risks in cold weather, there are a few risks in particular that come to mind first when thinking about blizzards, snow storms, ice, and sleet. These risks include pipe bursts and also slips and falls. Each of these two dangers is outlined below, along with the solution for coverage that we advise. Pipe bursts: As winter weather causes water to freeze, your pipes are at an increased risk of freezing. Pipe bursts tend to occur most often in the winter when there may be a couple of days without activity—perhaps during school breaks or slower times at the office. It is estimated that the most damage is done from pipe bursts— ...

Property Leases and General Liability

Did you know that many lease agreements contain clauses that outline the responsibility of tenants in situations where the property is damaged? In many instances, the person leasing the property is deemed liable for any damage done to the property, regardless of cause. Are you aware of what you would be liable for if the property you lease becomes damaged? It is important to make sure you know and understand the terms of your leases and how to ensure that you will be protected in case something unfortunate and unexpected happens to the property under your care. Without proper insurance, you could face hefty costs that could drastically impact you and your quality of life. If something happens to the property you lease and it becomes damaged, you can be held liable. If you do not have sufficient insurance, the landlord has the ability to sue you for the damages done to the property that y ...

Umbrella Coverage

Umbrella insurance coverage is a type of liability insurance that protects you beyond the limits of most other types of insurance. An umbrella insurance policy takes over when your other policies hit or exceed their limits of coverage. In the event that all of your insurance policies exceed their limits, umbrella coverage can protect your assets such as your home, cars, and retirement funds. While most policies cover you for one specific type of coverage such as auto insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance, umbrella coverage is a single policy with coverage that extends beyond other policy limits. Umbrella coverage covers most of your financial life and takes care of the extra costs in case you exceed the limits on other policies. Umbrella coverage can be thought of in a literal sense, too—just as an umbrella covers your entire body in a rainstorm, umbrella coverage covers all ...

Tennessee Workers’ Compensation Reform and WC Basics

Workers’ Compensation is a state-mandated form of insurance that provides wage replacement and compensation to employees that have faced injury or illness due to the demands of their job. This form of insurance is often referred to as ‘Workman’s Comp’. The federal government administers a workers’ compensation program for federal and other specific employees, while each individual state has its own laws and programs.  Generally, an employee that suffers a work-related injury can receive compensation regardless of whether the employee or employer was at fault—or another party entirely. In exchange for these guaranteed benefits, employees typically forfeit their right to sue the employer for damages due to injuries. In Tennessee, nearly all businesses are required to purchase worker’s compensation insurance. In Tennessee’s recent Workers’ Compensation reform, employers are more likely to s ...

How 1095-C Changes Will Impact Businesses

According to Bernard Health, there are several vital changes in regards to ACA (Affordable Care Act) Information Reporting for the 2016 tax year.  The 1095-C reporting processes will be different this year than they were last year and we want you to be prepared. As the next set of deadlines approaches, we want to make sure you are aware of the new changes so you are ready to file on time. Last year, there was a high level of leniency that allowed employers to file 2 months after the initial deadline. This next year will not have an extended deadline and will require diligence to ensure that the form is filed on time. However, there are more changes than just a new strict deadline. The changes include: Transition Relief:  There will not be transition relief this year, as the transition relief that was offered last year is officially ending. For the tax year of 2015, “Qualifying Offer Tra ...

Why Every Business Should Have Cyber Insurance Coverage

The rise of technology calls for a rise in security. As more people rely on technology in their personal and professional lives, cyber security is becoming one of the most important aspects of our internet-driven world. Whether it is personal information including credit card data, health records, bank statements, or other highly sensitive information—an individual’s privacy online is crucial to maintaining a safe and positive digital experience. Businesses are also affected by cyber security, but carry even more risk than individuals. If a business has a breach in security, they risk losing data that has been entrusted to them. When there is a security interruption, a business doesn’t just jeopardize their own privacy, but the privacy of their entire network of employees, vendors, customers, and contacts.  Although breaches in security can cause severe consequences for individuals, busi ...

Safety Tips for Grilling Season

It's summertime, and millions of Americans will be enjoying some of the tastes of the season this year by firing up the grill. However, whether due to inattention or inexperience, many of these outdoor cooking plans will quite literally go up in smoke. Grilling accidents are among the more common causes of household fires that take place each year in the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, an estimated 8,900 home fires occur annually, stemming from the use of grills, hibachis and barbecues. These incidents can also lead to serious burns, frequently requiring medical attention. In 2014, as an example, approximately 16,600 people had to be sent to emergency rooms due to injuries involving grills, based on NFPA's data. And while Americans grill year-round, most fires happen between May and August. With the proper preparation and understanding of how to gril ...

Why Every Working Person Needs Disability Insurance

Disability Insurance is something that most people don’t think about until they find themselves desperately needing it.  But what if we told you that every working person should have disability insurance? We believe it is in the best interest of all of our clients, whether they currently have a disability or not, to make sure that they are covered in the case of a major illness or disability. It can be easy to assume that one will always remain in the state of health that they are currently in, but 1 in 8 workers will be disabled for five or more years during their working careers. Furthermore, 2.6 years is about the average longer term disability absence. At any given time, 12% of the American population is classified as disabled (36 million). Although disabilities and illness vary in their severity, any person that develops a sickness that hinders one from working for an extended perio ...
