5 Tips to Protect Your Possessions with Valuable Items Insurance Coverage
You may think that a homeowners insurance policy provides adequate coverage for all your valuables, but policies may provide limited or no coverage for certain items — including generally expensive items — that are damaged or stolen. For example, many homeowners policies generally have a $1,000 or $1,500 coverage amount for jewelry if the loss is due to theft. Such limits are in place to help keep homeowners policies affordable. However, if jewelry valued at $2,000 is stolen from your home and you have a $1,000 policy limit, you can only receive $1,000 from your insurer to replace the missing items. That is when an insurance endorsement (sometimes called a rider) can provide increased coverage for your possessions. For an additional premium, this coverage can help protect you from the loss of high-end valuables such as jewelry, furs, antiques, artwork and collectibles. Here are five tip ...
Umbrella Insurance
If you own a home, car, or boat, you’re likely to have primary insurance policies that provide liability coverage for each of these assets. However, your primary policy limits may not be enough to cover all claimed damages, which can cause unexpected financial hardship. That’s where umbrella insurance comes in. Umbrella liability insurance is designed to further protect against the costs of: Claims made against you for bodily injury to others due to a car accident, boat incident, fall or other covered accidents. Claims made against you for covered damage to others’ property. Personal liability for claims like libel, slander, defamation of character and invasion of privacy. Potential out-of-pocket expenses related to each of these (or other) covered incidents. Additionally, with increasing dollar amounts awarded by juries in personal auto liability cases—driven partially by social infla ...

What Is a Smart Alarm System and Why Should I Consider One?

With those types of statistics, it is no wonder home security systems are on people's minds. But in a world where technology seems to evolve every month, home security systems have ventured into new territory: smart alarms. What Is a Smart Alarm System? Fast forward and today, consumers have smartphones, home networks and wireless technology—all of which the smart alarm system can util ...
Hail Protection for Your Home
Hail storms can strike without much warning, leaving you with little time to react. Being prepared in advance — and knowing what to do — can help you stay safe and keep damage to a minimum. Consider signing up for local weather alerts, which deliver warnings when hail storms are approaching your area. What Is Hail? Hail is a type of solid precipitation, distinct from, but often confused with sleet. Sleet generally falls in colder temperatures while hail growth is inhibited at very cold temperatures. Hail creation is possible within thunderstorms and is formed when water vapor in updrafts reaches a freezing point. Ice then forms and is suspended in the air by updrafts and falls down to be coated by water again. This process can occur over and over adding many layers to the hailstone. Hailstones can be as small as peas or as large as softballs, and the larger ones can cause injury and seri ...

The Science Behind Christmas Tree Fires
From the moment a spark ignites a Christmas tree, it can take only a matter of minutes before noxious smoke and scorching heat fill the entire room, igniting everything within it. Seconds later, the fire can travel up a staircase and perhaps make escape virtually impossible for anyone on the second floor of your home. There’s a scientific explanation for why these types of fires can be so dangerous, explains John Machnicki, a Travelers Risk Control fire safety professional. It has to do with how much heat energy a tree can emit and the conditions that allow the temperature within the room to rise so quickly. “Christmas trees are powerful fuel sources, especially when dry,” Machnicki said. “The tree becomes a fuel that burns very rapidly and gives off a lot of heat energy.” A blazing tree can give off as much heat as forty thousand 100-watt light bulbs, enough to create flashover within a ...

It is also important to recognize what checks and repairs you can do yourself, and what is best left to the professionals. These general guidelines and links can help you establish a basic car maintenance routine. Specific recommendations and instructions for your car can be found in your vehicle owner’s manual. Remember to follow your dealer’s recommended service schedule, too.
Driving in Fog Safely
Fog can be one of the most dangerous weather conditions for both new and experienced drivers. Fog has the potential to reduce visibility significantly, so it is critical that drivers stay focused on the road in order to stay safe. Knowing how to react to a sudden storm is critical to ensuring your safety in any situation when you may be caught unexpectedly. The following tips can help you stay safe when a storm does happen. Find indoor shelter. Get inside the nearest available hard-topped vehicle or building, keeping all windows shut, and stay there for at least 30 minutes after the storm passes before returning outside. Avoid picnic tents, pavilions or other open, outdoor structures. Get to low ground. Avoid hilltops and open areas. Lightning seeks the highest ground, so if indoor shelter is not available, crouching down in the nearest, lowest, unexpo ...

2018 Cigna wins approval to acquire Express Scripts
Cigna wins approval to acquire Express Scripts Pharma deals to reshape the industry The Department of Justice has granted antitrust approval of Cigna’s acquisition of pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts, the next move in a years-long trend of healthcare company consolidation. Many see the prescription drug industry — often characterized by high prices and an opaque supply chain — as ripe for disruption, which may be driving deals like the Cigna/Express merger. Cigna and Express Scripts said in a statement that merging the insurer and pharmacy benefit manager will reduce healthcare costs, expand choice and improve patient outcomes. However, some in the industry question what impact the deal will have on consumers, particularly as healthcare consolidation has often led to higher prices and fewer options. The deal is also considered to be a positive sign for CVS Health’s ...

In Memoriam of Larry Locke
My dad Larry Locke took his final breath this afternoon. He was in the comfort of his own home in Lebanon, Tennessee. It was as beautiful a spring day as Middle Tennessee can provide. Lovely breeze. Chirping birds. Blooming flowers. But Dad had been unable for weeks to notice the glory of God's created world. He was ready to go and be with the Lord forever. Over the last 2+ years, Larry had struggled with dementia and previously undiagnosed depression. A lifelong runner, he had never spent a night in the hospital prior to this sickness. The loss of his vitality was a blow to all who knew and loved him. While his first hospitalization returned him to a level close to his old self, subsequent declines and hospital stays left him a shadow of the man we knew. His time for this life would number 76 years. Larry Locke was born in 1942 in Shelbyville, Tennessee. His father, W. H. Locke, owned a ...
Network dispute leads to $14 million in balance bills
This article originally appeared in the Tennessean. Are you covered under BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Network S? You may not have known that prior to this year, BlueCross had an agreement with HCA TriStar hospitals to provide emergency care at in-network rates, even though HCA TriStar hospitals are not a part of Network S. That agreement ended as of January, and the result is a $14 million headache that may soon affect patients’ pocketbooks. HCA has announced it will soon begin balance billing BlueCross members for out-of-network care received at TriStar facilities. What does all this mean? In-network versus out-of-network Let’s take a step back and understand the difference between in-network and out-of-network, and how this distinction can cost consumers. Insurance companies negotiate with hospitals to discount bills for health care services. For example, Acme Hospital agrees ...
Workers' Compensation
Workers’ compensation is a type of insurance that all new employers need to provide for their employees. Therefore, it is important to understand what it is, and how it covers you and your employees from costly misfortunes. If an employee is injured while at the workplace, he or she will need to be insured to cover all medical and rehabilitation expenses. Workers’ compensation is a form of insurance that will cover all these expenses, and it will in some cases cover lost wages. As an employer, it is important to provide this type of insurance to your employees because it will give you, and them, peace of mind. Since this insurance will be covering all costs due to an injury on site, your employee gives up his or her right to sue your business for negligence. This is a win-win for all parties involved because of the time and expense that comes along with a lawsuit. The cost of workers’ co ...
